Isle of Man Railway - Dining Car 2014
It's full steam ahead for great gastronomical experiences with Isle of Man Railways during 2014.
The Victorian steam railway's newest feature is the Dining Car. Built in 1905 and meticulously restored last year, it was launched in autumn 2013 to great acclaim and excitement. The sumptuous surroundings of its three saloon carriages hark back to the Pullman-style fine dining of yesteryear although there is nothing old fashioned about the fabulous food served on board.
Mouth-watering menus offer the best of seasonal home grown produce teamed with carefully chosen wines, cocktails or soft drinks from the bar car. Menu options frequently include Manx queenies (locally caught succulent queen scallops), possibly followed by five-hour slow roasted shoulder of Manx lamb on rosemary mash and redcurrant and port jelly. You might then opt for a selection of artisan cheeses including creamy mature Manx cheddar with grapes and red onion jam, or an irresistible dessert, such as white chocolate and amaretto soufflé. Tea or coffee and locally made honeybread complete the meal.
Additionally, the Dining Car is operating a number of Manxman Sunday lunches and afternoon cream tea services during 2014 on the 15.5 mile journey between Douglas and Port Erin. It is also available for wedding parties, corporate and other private hire events, which can be tailored to individual requirements.
The Dining Car starts its 2014 season with romantic meals for Valentines and a number of specials including Mother’s Day lunches (30 March) and Murder Mystery Dinners. It will operate a Manxman dinner service on Monday and Saturday evenings during the summer (9 June to 25 August).
